TToML 4: Wii Play with a Creeper

Fall 2009. Living at Roman Gardens.

One Friday night, we were bored, as often occurs. There weren't any parties or dances that we knew about, but we weren't in the mood to stay home. Eventually it was decided that we would go to Walmart. We being Lindsay, Ben and Aaron Brooksby, and myself.

I can't even remember what the purpose of our trip was. We all probably had random things to grab. But since we were being unentertained otherwise, we just wandered the entire store, finding plenty of ways to entertain ourselves.

When we got to the electronics part of the store, I saw the Wii and went over to it. I briefly tried to do whatever it was that the game wanted me to do...shoot a crossbow or something, and quickly found I didn't know how to do it and I didn't really care that much.

I went to set down the remotes when all of a sudden this guy appeared. He was wearing a leather jacket and I could tell just by the way he was standing there that he was not at all interested in the Wii.

"You're giving up?" he smoothly asked.
"Umm yeah, it wasn't working."
"Here, let me show you how...."

He picked up the remotes and gave me that look that said, "Don't go anywhere. I'm about to impress you."

Now if this happened, say today, I would know a lot better how to get myself out of this situation. But this was over two years ago when I was younger and not as wise as I am now.

I turned to look back at my friends who were still over by the movies, hoping they would see me in trouble and someone would come rescue me. They were in fact all watching me and they could see that I was in trouble, but instead of coming to rescue me they were laughing. Aaron even had his phone out, taking a video. I gave them that look that said, "Please, save me!" and I think they just laughed harder. I shook my head at them and turned back to Mr. Leather Jacket, because I thought that was the only option I had.

In the meantime, he was struggling to figure out what to do. He pushed all the buttons, made all the flicking movements he could think of, and nothing on the screen seemed to be doing what he meant it to do.

"Hmm, this doesn't appear to be working very well. I can't figure out why...." he said as he continued to wave his hands around.
"Yeah, that's why I gave up."
"Well, that's too bad. It would have been fun to play with you."
"Uh yeah....ummm I have to go..."

I feel like he probably tried another smooth line on me, but regretfully I don't remember. All I know is I wanted to get away from this creepy stranger as soon as I could, although I wasn't sure how much I wanted to rejoin my "friends" either. But of the two, my friends were definitely the lesser creepy.

For the rest of the night they laughed at me. Every ten minutes Aaron was like, "Hey Steph, remember that one time when that guy...."

"Shut up, Aaron. Go watch your video."
